The Unlikely Pair

Written for 7+ young performers, ages 10–15

When Maple the miniature donkey arrives at Clucky Hollow Rescue Farm, she’s hopeful—but uncertain—about fitting in. The resident animals are quirky, loud, and full of personality, and despite their best efforts, none seem to be the right match. But just when Maple starts to feel more lost than ever, she discovers friendship in the most unexpected place: with Tater, the grumpy barn cat who sees the world a little differently. A warm and funny one-act play about belonging, quiet strength, and the joy of finding someone who truly understands you. This is a pdf digital download.

Core Cast (5–7 Characters + Ensemble Options)

1. Maple – A shy miniature donkey, new to the rescue farm. Sweet but hesitant.
2. Henrietta – A bossy but well-meaning hen with big opinions and a bigger heart.
3. Nibbles – A dramatic, overly theatrical goat who thinks every moment is a performance.
4. MooMoo – A gentle cow who speaks slowly but thinks deeply. Loves philosophical questions.
5. Pickle – A hyper, silly duck who always seems to be underfoot or causing a ruckus.
6. Tater – A gruff, solitary barn cat who likes naps and not much else (Maple’s eventual best friend).
7. Chester – A cheery pig who thinks everyone is a friend (and talks with food in his mouth).
